As a result of the uproar among users over the availability of spam, Google has suspended a feature it offers to businesses using Rich Communication Services (RCS) to place ads through its Messages app. Although RCS intends to upgrade to an existing short message service (SMS) offering rich media and interactivity, a list of businesses across the country has begun to misuse the new messaging experience by starting to give a lot of ads to users.
A Google representative said the company had decided to disable the feature that allows businesses to display ads via RCS in Google messages as a result of violations of the company’s policies.
“We know that some businesses are abusing our anti-spam policies to send promotional messages to users in India,” the spokesman said.”We disable this feature in India as we work with the industry to improve the user experience.”
As of last week, Google has stopped circulating ads through RCS messaging as a result of the update.
However, as it seems to be a temporary measure to respond to user complaints and to strengthen systems to limit future advertising misuse, it is unclear to what extent existing controls will be in place for businesses. Earlier this month, the issue of growing ads on Google Messages in India came to the fore.
Over the past few months, affected users have taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to report issues related to the increasing number of ads on Google Messages. As Ishan Agarwal pointed out, promotional content was annoying to users, especially as it comes with the pre-installed app and is the default on most Android phones today.
The RCS experience in Google Messages has been completely disabled to avoid annoying ads by some users.
Personal loan ads promoted by banks and financial institutions, including Kotak Mahindra Bank and Bajaj Finserv, cover a large portion of the promotional content. However, some ads showed small loan apps.
While businesses may not display ads on Google Messages, it should be noted that business customers can use RCS to communicate with their customers at Apple.
