Half of 2019 is over and we have seen a lot of flagship smartphones which got launched during this period. Apple is yet to launch their 2019 iPhone, so Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 is the only 2019 flagship processor which is being used by most flagship of the year. Usually, Qualcomm launches one flagship processor for one year, but this year, they launched second.
Qualcomm has just announced 2nd flagship processor of 2019, Snapdragon 855 Plus. This is a minor upgrade over the current Snapdragon 855 processor. The major difference is in the GPU, the Adreno 640 is clocked at higher speed that gives 15% boost over the current Adreno 640 GPU. Also the more powerful core, Kryo 485 is overclocked to 2.96Ghz from 2.84Ghz in current 855. This is 4% boost in CPU performance. These are the only changes in this new processor. Rest specs are same as current chipset.
Talking about the availability of Snapdragon 855 Plus, Asus has announced that their ROG Phone II will be the first smartphone to ship with this new processor. With last year’s ROG Phone, Qualcomm designed an overclocked version of Snapdragon 845. But this time Snapdragon 855 Plus will be available for all OEMs. So we can expect flagships like Galaxy Note 10, OnePlus 7T Pro/7T, and Pixel 4 series.
So that’s all the information we have as of now. This is not the first time Qualcomm has launched two flagship processors. They launched Snapdragon 821 after Snapdragon 820 in the same year.
