If you are an admin of any group in WhatsApp or Facebook then be careful, as new order says posting offensive posts in a group could land the admin in jail.
In a joint order issued by Varanasi District Magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police Nitin Tiwari, posting any incorrect, rumour or misleading information on a social media group could make an FIR against the administrator of the group.
The order came in the concern over the misuse of social media to spread fake news, morphed photographs and videos with fabricated narratives that can trigger tension and even communal rift in an area. Directives are being issued to social groups, WhatsApp and Facebook administrators and member to avoid fake news, if any statement is made by any member of the group which is fake news, can cause religious disharmony or rumour, the admin of the group must deny the news and remove the particular member.
Moreover, the order indicates that the social media group admins should be ready to bear the responsibility and ownership of the groups. The admin must include only those members who are personally known to him or her. In the event of inaction from the group admin, he/she will be guilty and action taken against the admin of the group.
This is really a good order and it is very necessary to curb fake news, but I think making all the responsibility on the admin’s shoulder is really unfair because he is not spreading any unwanted news. Share your thoughts about the new order in the comment section below.
