OpenAI is killing its recently announced browser dubbed the ChatGPT Atlas and the company is replacing the browser with a smarter ChatGPT app. The browser was originally announced in October 2025 and the browser was built around ChatGPT.
Now the company is replacing it with the revamped ChatGPT desktop app and the browser will be retired on August 9. The newly designed ChatGPT desktop app now combines ChatGPT, Codex and ChatGPT Work into a single application.
This will be including a built-in browser that can browse websites, compare information from multiple sources, access Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 files, and continue tasks while users review the results.
The company is also bringing a Chrome extension that brings ChatGPT into the browser sidebar and the same will enable you to summarise webpages, ask questions about online content and perform longer tasks without switching applications.
