The Mountain View giant Google is is working on their version of a foldable smartphone Google Pixel to compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Mi Mix Fold from Xiaomi. According to the report, Google will make use of the ultra-thin glass (UTG) developed by the South Korean company Samsung Display who has been supplying it exclusively to Samsung Electronics up until now.
Analysts see this move from Samsung Display to supply the ultra-thin glass (UTG) to make use of the revenue generated and expand its foldable display business. We also expect other OEMs to make use of this opportunity and develop their own versions of the foldable displays later this year.
For reference, the Google Pixel Ultra-Thin Glass was demoed by Samsung in February 2020 and had informed that the manufacturing of the glass requires an intensifying process to strengthen the glass along with achieving required flexibility when compared to the tried and tested polyimide cover window.
The first smartphone to feature this technology was none other than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip which employed the Ultra-Thin Glass to protect the inner screen. We have no concrete information about this secret foldable smartphone from Google, but we suspect it to debut alongside the Pixel 6 Series.
