Google launches an open source API standard called Google Ripplegle. It has the ability to make its radar technology accessible to everyone.
Several companies are already participating in the program, including Ford, Texas Instruments, blood pressure sensor maker Bloomio, Infinion, and NXSP – so it’s clear that Google is up to something this time around.
It aims to develop an “Open Radar API standard” to enable hardware and software interoperability and to accelerate the growth of applications for general-purpose consumer radar.
Experts from different industries including silicon, sensing, automotive, and electronics have already teamed up with Google to develop standard ripple API interfaces for the development of this radar system.
Here are some of Ripple’s applications, Non-invasive wellness monitoring that allows you to measure the important sign of contactless and track sleep for home and clinical use.Occupancy detection that can be used to optimize the use of office buildings and public spaces.
Human activity identification that helps to understand a person’s position and direction, to detect falls, to assist pedestrians directly, and to exercise tracking. Finally, touchless gesture controls that expand the way humans interact with their cars, home appliances, and consumer electronics.
Ford told The Virgin that indoor radar could become part of its driver-assist technologies with the following statement:
“Beyond our flagship Ford Co-Pilot 360 driver-assist technologies that use advanced exterior radars today, we are researching how to use interior radar as a sensor source to enhance a variety of customer experiences.
A standard API with a semiconductor industry partnership allows us to develop software independently of hardware sourcing and to provide software teams with the ability to upgrade across multiple radar platforms.
Other companies are also exploring the Google Ripplegle radar. For example, Amazon is researching whether radar can help users monitor their sleep patterns.
