There’s no doubt that the Qualcomm, MediaTek, Snapdragon, Samsung are the rulers of the mobile phone Processor Manufacturer. But the Spreadtrum isn’t that behind in the race, the Chinese processor maker is gaining grounds in the Mobile processor world on entry-level devices successfully. It was founded in 2001, and then joined their hands with Intel in producing chips.
There are many devices which are powered by the chips of Spreadtrum such as ZTE, Archos, Leagoo etc. Well, now they are all set to enter into the big world of Tech Giants and ready to take them head-on.
Low-end CHIPS of Spreadtrum
The chips struggled to adapt the 3G spectrum in 2012. Improving the nano-transistors and speed of working they were able to catch up with the Samsung’s S4 and started lining up with the Samsung Chips and delivering a couple of single-core A7 and dual-core A5 chips.
Leading the smartphone were Snapdragon’s 212, MediaTek MT6582. Powering the low specification phone was little too much for the Spreadtrum at that time considering the just establishment of the firm.Still seeing the obsolete Mali 400 GPU being used in the A7 chips.
A rather interesting observation was noted related to processors and camera support. The graphics cores maxed out as follows –
SINGLE CORE – 720P for 8MP
DUAL CORE – 1080P for 8MP
QUAD CORE – 1080P for 13mp
Take Away-
These chips are basically similar to Qualcomm’s 32-bit Snapdragon 200 & 400 series in lots of fashion.Consequently, quad-core A7 CPU’s will be supporting camera maxing out at 13MP and LTE support alongside.
Mid-end CHIPS of Spreadtrum
Receiving blows of failure in Low-end, Only One chip ( SC9860GV ) was able to make way into this category.Sadly No phone Housed this Chip due to more competitive advantage.
We also viewed the LTE connectivity and a GPU supporting one which is significantly slower than Nowadays flagship. The SC9860GV packs a Mali T880 ( the same chip which powered HUAWEI P9 & MATE 8 ).The T880 was also used to power Samsung S7 models.
This chipset was unveiled at Mobile Worlds Congress 2016 which also supported Dual-Camera Setup and a 4K playback codec. So why wasn’t it adopted by Manufactures?
The Snapdragon counterpart did all the same with battery efficient working. That means harnessing same power with the Low requirement from source.Hence Improving the Battery Backup of phones.
Take Away-
It is not about features Spreadtrum was offering it was how Early could you deliver it. With the advantage of less power consumption the use of this chip was discarded
Top-end CHIPS of Spreadtrum

Much like previous categories, there are slim picking even in this category. The chips SC9853i and SC9861G-IA are building on Intel’s 14nm manufacturing process. Both chips are essentially Octa core versions or Atom.
The chip also supports up to 16MP+8MP dual cameras, but not sure about display resolution. It’s also noteworthy that 4K recording isn’t guaranteed with this chip, offering 1080p which is a letdown.
Take Away –
Where NOW?
Working on better future the firm has been immensely working on more quick and efficient adoption of technology.Considering 5G has the main objective, the firm has already joined hands with Top Class-exclusive content regarding their performance.
Spreadtrum, which is already working with various global brands, has been very meticulous or even picky to select its first SC9853i smartphone partner because its ambition has little tolerance for business mistakes”.
