A video leak from WEIBO shows Vivo smartphone with an on-screen fingerprint sensor. Smartphone analyst Pan Jiutang shared the short clip on Weibo with a Vivo phone that looks a lot like the X9 Plus with an all-metal unibody design with dual-rear cameras setup, holds an embedded optical fingerprint sensor into the screen.
The on-screen fingerprint sensor on smartphones have been predicted to make a debut this year, While 2017 is the year of bezel-less and edge-to-edge displays, and there have been rumors that Apple could bring the tech in its next iPhone. Some reports pointed that Samsung failed in its attempt to integrate a fingerprint sensor into the screen of the Galaxy S8
Pan jiutang says that “Vivo might have found a way around the required technology to integrate fingerprint sensor into the display and is likely to achieve this feat ahead of the likes of Samsung and Apple. Also, the Chinese manufacturer might launch a smartphone with the technology in place in a couple of months from now”.
A report claims that other Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi and Huawei might also launch smartphones with an on-screen fingerprint sensor. Huawei P11 is the first device said to launch in the year 2018, with an on-screen fingerprint sensor.
Apple is facing difficulties in bringing the in-display sensor. While an Apple patent suggests the company might relocate the Touch ID sensor to the power button that showcased last week. CrucialTec, a fingerprint module maker, earlier this year announced its solution that lets high-res scanning through glass with a button-free design. Another fingerprint module maker Synaptics introduced its optical fingerprint scanner for smartphones and tablets which are capable of high-res scanning through 1mm of glass with button-free design last year.
