The 5G network rollout is expected to take place in 2023 if not the end of 2022. Although neither the government nor the relevant department has revealed an exact timeline, there are multiple reports claiming that the 5G spectrum auction will take place in the second half of this year. However, Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has clarified the timing of the auction.
The telecom minister said the telecom department was working on schedule and steps were being taken to address concerns related to spectrum pricing. According to Ashwini Vaishnav, the government is likely to hold 5G spectrum in early June.
The spectrum auction will take place in early June, paving the way for a nationwide 5G network rollout, the telecom minister said. “We are ready to bid according to our timeline,” Vaishna said. The mega-auction is worth Rs 7.5 lakh crore at a base price in multiple bands for radio waves that have been allowed for more than 30 years.
In addition, the Minister said that the Digital Communications Commission will be called on TRAI’s recommendations and will approach them for clarification. Telecom Watchdog has recommended a mega-auction of Rs 7.5 lakh crore for more than one lakh MHz spectrum, which the government has set aside for 30 years. However, in 20 years, the total value of the proposed spectrum auction will be around Rs 5.07 lakh crore at reserve price.
