In this AI era most apps and services we use work on algorithms – except a few whose
data flow is controlled by humans at the backend. One of many variants of Google
LLC’s famous service – YouTube Kids – meant specially for the kid’s works on algorithms
as other apps and services of Google do.
This app is specially designed to filter out youtube content for kids, showing them only what
they must see. But recently it is in the news that it is suggesting videos that some people prefer
to call “CONTROVERSIAL”. It’s being said that the app suggested videos related to ‘conspiracy theory’. (which is indeed trending now), ‘Moon landing’,’shape of Earth’, ‘Aliens’ etc…
While some of them are educational, they are not meant for children of the age group for which the app is designed. None the less they affect emotional and mental ideas of children, so better keep them away from children. This trouble was likely caused because of increase in popularity of these keywords, which the algorithms might have assumed() to be good videos – as they don’t have any cognitive functions, it’s obivious.
Rumors suggest that YouTube is likely releasing a new YouTube Kids app that shows videos handpicked by the group of experts at YouTube. But the algorithm based app will also be in use alongside this new app. YouTube hasn’t given any information on the topic, but this was the comment by YouTube- “We are always working to update and improve YouTube Kids, however, we don’t comment on rumor or speculations”
