In recent, manufacturers came up with some truly fold-able smartphones which raised everyone’s eyes. These expensive smartphones use plastic polymer screens and they need more protection in today’s standards. Conventional glass cannot be fold enough to support fold-able smartphones for protection. Corning is planning to create a new bendable glass for new fold-able smartphones.
“The back of the problem we’re trying to break, the technical challenge, is, can you keep those tight 3- to 5-millimeter bend radii and also increase the damage resistance of the glass, We have glasses we’ve sampled to customers, and they’re functional, but they’re not quite meeting all the requirements, People either want better performance against a drop event or a tighter bend radius. We can give them one or the other; the key is to give them both.” Corning’s John Bayne told Wired.
Corning is trying to break the technological barrier in providing Gorilla Glass protection for fold-able smartphones which is not easy as it sounds. They have been creating some prototypes to match the manufacturer’s needs. If corning comes up with a solution, consumer-friendly fold-able smartphones are near!
