Earlier today, ARM unveiled its new high-end core CPU design to be featured in flagship smartphones of 2021. They are namely the AMR Cortex-A78 and Cortex-X1. These core designs promise a huge leap in performance and are expected to bring SoC’s closer to Apple’s Bionic lineup of chipsets. Let us see in detail what these have to offer.

The Cortex-A78 is the straight-up successor to Cortex-A77. It promises a 20% boost in performance with the same amount of power consumption from the source. At the same time it also promises 50% less power consumption if used to draw out performance at the same level as Cortex-A77. The Cortex-A78 thankfully shrinks up to 15% in size, occupying less space. The big.LITTLE architecture seen in next year’s smartphone CPU design will see 4x Cortex-A78 and 4x Cortex A55 configuration. ARM has not tweaked the low power cores known by the name Cortex-A55 this year.
The star of the presentation was the Cortex-X1 CPU cores. These are the company’s custom line of CPU cores. These are the end result of ARM’s CXC program to design custom cores with their partners. It promises a 30% higher peak performance than the current Cortex-A77. It also takes 23% less time in doing the integral calculations as it posses double the machine learning abilities. The Cortex-X1 Cores occupies more space and requires more power than Cortex-A78. This makes it impossible at the moment to fit Cortex-X1 in large numbers inside the CPU of smartphones, given the resource constraints. ARM will only use a single Cortex-X1 core inside a CPU and would fill in the architecture with possibly three Cortex-A78 cores and up to four Cortex-A55 cores.
ARM has also refreshed its GPU lineup with Mali-G78 and Mali-G68 GPUs. The Mali-G78 uses the Valhall architecture of its predecessor – Mali G77. But it promises a 25% boost in performance in certain situations and also offers up to 24 core designs. The company states that the new GPU will offer a 17% increase in the real-world performance of mobile games. The Mali-G68 is a smaller version of the Mali-G78 and it supports fewer core designs making it more efficient and compact in size.
According to rumors the new Cortex-X1 CPU Core is expected to debut with Google’s Pixel 5. At the moment we do not know about the launch date of the upcoming Google flagship. Samsung is also working with AMD for improved GPU designs incorporating the Radeon GPU designs. With the upcoming CPUs and GPUs Android OEMs hope to finally catch up to Apple’s Bionic SoC designs and if possible outnumber it.
