The police department of Meerut confiscated a whopping 13,500 units of smartphones alleging fraud. These smartphones ran the same IMEI number, which is a combination used to identify each cellphone uniquely. All the smartphones were from Vivo, and the authorities have filed a case against the company and their service center.
The incident unfolded when a police officer submitted his smartphone for service and repair. Even after restoration, his unit was not functioning correctly. This made the policeman hand over the unit to cybercrime cell for examination, according to the Akhilesh N Singh, SP (city). Upon further investigation, it was found that there were 13,500 units of smartphones running the same IMEI number. IMEI number or (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit code allowing us to differentiate between multiple devices with the SIM card input.
According to the SP, this is a severe breach of security. Singh said this carelessness from the mobile company could allow criminals to use smartphones for crimes and get away due to this fault. He added that a case had been registered under relevant sections of the law. The Police Department is calling a team of experts to further look into the matter.
Vivo is one among the popular Chinese brands enjoying a large chunk of the Indian smartphone market share. As of Q1 2020, the company has a 17% share in the Indian market. They have grown a healthy 40% in YOY valuation. It is the second-largest smartphone brand in the country, pulling ahead of Samsung. The majority of the consumers of Vivo comes from the offline market. The company has improved its online presence thanks to the Vivo U-Series and Z-Series.
