According to the ClassDojo website, 95 percent of US schools are using the ClassDojo app to “engage kids and connect with families.” Designed to act as a bridge between the school and home, ClassDojo is an educational technology that uses communication tools such as photos, videos and messages to keep parents abreast of their children’s progress at school. It also lets teachers provide feedback and created portfolios for their pupils.
Launched by Sam Chaudhary and Liam Don from ImagineK12 way back in August 2011, ClassDojo was developed to promote a positive culture in the classroom, give students a voice and share school moments with parents.
And the app is very simple to use, highlights the founder of the online education platform EducalinkAPP.com. “After a teacher registers for a free account, they can develop customizable classes with their students. They can also upload pictures and videos, as well as message the families (read receipts are sent so teachers to alert them once the message has been read). Better still, messages sent on the app can be automatically translated into 35 languages, which is ideal in cases where the parents and teachers don’t speak the same language.”
Students do not need to register for an account. All they need to do is get an access code from their teacher, which lets them customize their avatar, view posted information, and upload their own photos and videos. Families can also access the app upon an invitation from a teacher. Once in, they can stay updated about their child’s progress through photos and videos.
Families can also get an optional at-home-learning bundle called ‘ClassDojo Beyond School.’ Located inside the ClassDojo app, the bundle offers features such as a point system to promote positive study habits at home, as well as daily, weekly, monthly and all-time reports for children’s classes. ‘ClassDojo Beyond School’ has a variety of subscription options – monthly, six-monthly and annually – at different prices.
Standing testament to its success, over the years ClassDojo has received a multitude of accolades. In fact, the app received the Today Show’s Education Innovation Award shortly after its release in 2011. Since then ClassDojo has also been recognized as one of “The 35 Most Innovative Apps of the Year” in 2016, one of the “25 Most Disruptive Companies” of 2017 and the “Best of British Technology” in 2019.
In fact, ClassDojo has proven so popular in Europe that now other companies around the globe have started building apps around the same concept. A good example is Blended, a school/parent communication app in Latin America. “Our team started to do research in the field and learned the best practices from US and European companies to find an efficient solution to [the issue of parent/school communication]. Inspired by ClassDojo, we made a plan to build something similar but with specific features for Latin America,” states the Blended website.
ClassDojo can be uploaded to both iPhones and Androids, and can be used on any other device with a browser including Kindle Fire and any computer.
