Device Lock Controller App from Google Could Help Carriers Block Your Phone if You Fail to Pay

A new app from Google has popped up on the Play Store titled “Device Lock Controller”. It was first released back in June and currently has around 10 installs. The app’s function is to allow creditors, banks, carriers who you owe money block your service if you fail to pay the bill. The app description in the Play Store says:

Device Lock Controller enables device management for credit providers. Your provider can remotely restrict access to your device if you do not many payments. If your device is restricted, basic functionality, such as emergency calling and access to settings, will still be available.

According to XDA Developers,  the DeviceAdminService API is being used in the app to remotely control functions of the device.“This is the same API that enterprises use to control what employees can do with their work phones,” says XDA Developers. This paves way for a third party to lock you out of your phone or limit services if you owe them money and fail to pay them on time.

This could cause major problems as people rely on their smartphones in a significant capacity in today’s age. On the other hand, it could help reduce the theft of smartphones drastically. We have seen telecom operators limit services when there is a delay in payments. But the new app allows them to render ones device useless which could invite unforeseen circumstances.
