Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter might be banned from tomorrow, May 26, if they fail to comply with the new Intermediary Guidelines. The deadline set to follow the orders were set on May 25 but none of these apps has shown compliance with the guideline.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had given a three-month deadline for the social media platforms to appoint a compliance officer from India. These representatives would have been responsible for then address the complaints, overlook the content and demand removal if objectionable.
These guidelines were also applicable to OTT platforms such as Amazon Prime, Netflix and so on. According to the Government of India if a complaint against the content of OTT platforms were raised and appropriate action would be taken in 15 days. When the concern was raised the government welcomes online platforms to form a regulatory body to address concerns which they failed to do.
The US-based social media giants had asked six months to plan the change as they had to consult with the headquarters. One spokesperson representing Facebook commented, “We aim to comply with the provisions of the IT rules and continue to discuss a few of the issues which need more engagement with the government. Pursuant to the IT rules, we are working to implement operational processes and improve efficiencies. Facebook remains committed to people’s ability to freely and safely express themselves on our platform.”
This new rule will now put GOI in complete control of the online platforms and will have the power to take action if these platform contents are found guilty of a violation of the regulation. So far, only Koo an Indian alternative to Twitter has so far adhered to the new guideline. What do you think will happen? Will the government ban these platforms or extend the deadline to execute the regulation in motion? Let us know in the comments below.
