At the beginning of the year, FCC decided to open a 6 GHz band for the WiFi connectivity. It was dubbed as WiFi 6E. Now Qualcomm has introduced modems with WiFi 6E, named FastConnection 6900 and FastConnection 6700. Let us see how the new standard can give a boost to the beloved WiFi Technology.
WiFi 6E can use a 1200 MHz wave spectrum which is considered to be a huge leap for the technology since inception. The 1200 MHz opens up fresh spectrum with no legacy devices getting in the way. It is also contiguous as there are no legacy issues. The WiFi 6E offers seven 160 MHz channels. In comparison, the 5 GHz WiFi that we are using now offers only leaves room for 2 channels.
The FastConnection 6900 modem supports 4 streams (2×2 + 2×2) Dual Band Simultaneous (DBS) operation. It facilitates a combination of a 2×2 6 GHz connection with a 2×2 5 GHz connection. The most important aspect is the speed of the WiFi 6E Standard. On average, WiFi 6E can provide a speed of 3.6 Gbps. But the FastConnection 6700 lacks DBS nut still can reach a speed of 2.9 Gbps.
In addition, Qualcomm promises a latency of just 3mn with the new modes. This paves way for new development in smooth wireless AR and VR applications, not to mention the boost the online gaming industry will get. The low latency rate is made possible due to the free channel that 6 GHz offers combined with the fine running of hardware by Qualcomm.
Both FastConnect modems offer significant improvements in Bluetooth 5.2 as these support Dual Bluetooth Antenna configuration promising better reliability. The aptX Adaptive from the company, audio via Bluetooth can go up to 96 kHz. According to Qualcomm, this matches the audio quality of wired headphones. They have also added aptX Voice promising 32 kHz bandwidth. In comparison, current HD Voice standard gets just 16 kHz.
Qualcomm has revealed its plan to deliver samples of FastConnect 6900 and 6700 modems later this year. So we can expect the 2021 Flagships to come with this technology. If you manage to get a WiFI 6E Router, you can enjoy speeds of up to 3 Gbps with the upcoming smartphones.
