In 2014, Google acquired Nest Labs for $3.2 billion but the maker of the Nest Learning Thermostat and Protect Smoke Detector Company continued to operate independently. Now after almost 4 years Google has started to deep dive into the world of Artificial intelligence and Virtual Assistants with the launch of Google Assistant and Google Home.
Since Nest has become a hub for everything from security cameras to video doorbells. Last year, it also launched the Nest Secure alarm system, and now Google has released a new update to the Nest app which enables you the use Google Assistant voice commands to control your Nest Secure.
To integrate Nest Secure with the Google Assistant you need to update your Nest app. Once you start using Google Assistant with the Nest Secure alarm system it gives you the ability to check in on the status of your home security, as well as arming the system and changing modes.
Once the update process is completed, just issue a voice command to Google Assistant: “Hey Google, sync my devices.” Now Secure should be connected to the assistant. Below are the voice commands such as the following:
- Hey Google, set Nest Secure to Home and Guarding.
- Hey Google, set Nest Secure to Away and Guarding.
- Hey Google, what’s the status of my security?
- Hey Google, cancel security.
A disclaimer though, the integration update comes with its limitations according to Nest:
- When you arm through a Google Assistant-enabled speaker, the speaker will announce how much time you have left and if there are any security concerns. Nest Guard will stay silent.
- If Nest Secure requires a passcode to set the alarm, you won’t be able to arm using a voice command.
- You can’t switch from one security level to another using a voice command. Instead, you’ll need to disarm and then re-arm with the security level you want.
Also, you need to stay a few seconds after arming your system so that not anyone can turn it off without your authorization. And you can only give the command if you armed the system with a voice command in the first place.
