After a lot of wait and leaks, Google launched Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones at Google I/O 2019 event. Both these smartphones are sort of low budget Pixel smartphone, which means the cheapest Pixel ever launched. So without wasting much time, let’s dig into the specs.
Starting with the smaller one, this Pixel 3a sports a 5.6 inch OLED display with Full HD+ (2220×1080) resolution and 441 ppi. The aspect ratio is 18.5:9 and it is protected with Dragontrail Glass, not the Gorilla Glass. The desing is pretty similar to Pixel 3, and the bezels are also almost equally thick, or even a bit more thicker. It comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 octa core processor clocked at 2.0 Ghz and built on 10nm process. For gaming it had Adreno 615 GPU. It has 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, and no expandable storage.
Talking about the camera, which is the biggest highlight of this smartphone. This smaller version has exactly the same camera setup as regular Pixel 3. A 12.2MP IMX363 rear facing unit with f1.8 lens, 1.4µm pixels, and Optical Image Stabilization. On the front there’s the same 8MP unit with f2.0 lens. Most probably Google will implement same software to this one as well, just like regular Pixel 3.
It runs on stock Android 9.0 Pie out of the box, with guaranteed updates for 3 years. It packs in a 3000mAh battery with support of 18W fast charging. The fingerprint sensor is mounted at the back. The thing on this device that is first for any Pixel device is the 3.5mm headphone jack. Yes, it has that ‘feature’, along with stereo speakers. For connectivity it has 4G, Wi-Fi 802.11 dual band, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC, aptX HD, and Type-C Port. It weighs at 147 grams and is 8.2mm thick.
Pixel 3a XL:
Now let’s talk about this big brother. There aren’t a lot of difference between both, but it’s better in some aspects. Starting off with the display, it sports a larger 6.0 inch OLED display with Full HD+ (2160×1080) resolution and 402 ppi. The aspect ratio is 18:9 and it also has Dragontrail Glass for protection. Thankfully it doesn’t has that big notch present on regular Pixel 3XL, but the bezels are very thick and that’s better for me personally.
It comes with the same processor and GPU, and it also has the same storage configuration as Pixel 3a. The rear camera setup is also same as Pixel 3 XL, but the front facing camera is a bit different. The Pixel 3XL has dual front camera, with secondary wide-angle lens. But this Pixel 3a XL only has single 8MP camera.
It also runs on stock Android 9.0 Pie of the box, and guaranteed update for 3 years. It packs a bigger 3700mAh battery with 18W fast charging. The fingerprint sensor is mounted at the back. This one also has the 3.5mm headphone jack, along with stereo speakers. For connectivity it has 4G, Wi-Fi 802.11 dual band, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC, aptX HD, and Type-C Port. It weighs at 167 grams and is 8.2mm thick.

So that’s all the information we have as of now. Personally I feel that both are overpriced smartphones, but due to low sales of regular Pixel 3 and 3 XL, their price is fallen down a lot. So it won’t make much sense to buy any of these two, unless the price of regular Pixel 3 series is not dropped much in your country. What are your thoughts on both Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL?
