Google released the December 2021 Pixel Feature Drop for devices ranging from Pixel 3a to Pixel 5a. Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will receive these updates later this month, along with some additional bug fixes and patches.
The update comes with Google’s latest security patch and hundreds of optimization changes and bug fixes. But let’s focus on the new features introduced in this feature update.
Conversation mode for the sound amplifier
Pixel devices have become the first Android phones to achieve speech mode for the Sound Amplifier accessibility tool. This feature helps those who are hard of hearing or with hearing impairments.
You can use this feature by pointing your phone at the camera UI towards any person who wants to have a conversation. The feature then lets you pin that person as a participant in the conversation, while adjusting the background volume while giving you enhanced audio of what they say through your Bluetooth headphones.
Bass Boost for Pixel Buds A-series
Pixel Buds A-Series TWS earphones have a very neutral sound profile. They get the bass boost feature, which allows them to add some extra power to their voice output. This feature can be accessed via a slider in the Pixel Buds app, which allows bass levels to slide from -1 to +4.
Ultrawide band integration in Nearby Share
With the Android 12 update, Pixel phones have got a nearby share feature that allows them to transfer data via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, similar to Airdrop. Now, this feature drop enables the Pixel 6 Pro to use a wideband chip for ‘near sharing’ that enables you to send data in a specific direction.
Now Playing Search
An improved now-featured search feature that has been released to devices for the past one month is officially coming to more devices with the December pixel feature drop. Am
This feature previously worked with the device’s database to identify nearby songs, work offline, and maintain user privacy. This caused the problem of many songs not being recognized due to the limited database on the device.
With the latest update, if your device does not recognize the song, a new search music icon will appear on your lock screen. Tapping on the icon will transfer audio data to Google Search, which will quickly identify the song.
Car crash detection new feature
Google Pixel’s car crash detection feature has been around since 2019, and it has helped save multiple lives. The detection app gets a new feature that lets you check if it’s OK ‘when it crashes, and if there is no response, the Pixel device can share your location and other relevant details with emergency responders.
Google Recorder app update
Featuring transcription capabilities, the popular Recorder app supports more languages, including Japanese, French, and German. These additional languages introduced on Pixel 6 series phones are now available for other Pixel devices supported by this update.
Double-tap feature for Snapchat
Google has added Snapchat to its list of apps that support the Quick Tap feature of Android 12. The photo sharing app can now be set up to access it with a double-tap gesture on the back of the Pixel device. This feature works even with screen lock, enabling you to capture those moments instantly on your devices.
This feature is supported on Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5 and Pixel 6 series devices. Starting this month, Pixel phones will also get exclusive ‘Pixel Face Lens’ filters, which will be further enhanced by future feature updates.
You will notice that the logo changes color on the first boot after this update. The Google logo, which first appears, retains its standard brand identity colors. But the animation that becomes Google G (and the associated loading bar) will pull the material of your phone from your background colors.
In addition to these key features, Google has added Wi-Fi and Internet Quick Toggle, which for some reason were not available after the launch of Android 12. After this feature update you will be able to access WiFi and Internet Toggle from your lock screen.
