Fraunhofer HHI has announced a new standard in video called Versatile Video Codec (H.266/VVC). This new standard has been released after several years of research in partnership with giants like Apple, Ericsson, Intel, Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Sony. Let us what improvements does H.266 brings to the video world.

H.266 will cut down the video file size and bandwidth required for streaming in half. This means a 1 GB file would be just 500 MB in size if it is encoded in the H.266 codec standard. While reducing the size, H.266 promises to retain the same video quality as its predecessor H.265/HEVC. This would relieve the traffic load on the internet a lot as 80% of its users are always streaming some video or the other.
The new codec can handle videos from SD to 8K or 360-degree even if they are with HDR. The H.266 coded can be used for screen sharing or game streaming. As it was designed with 4K and above in mind, those who are concerned about video quality will definitely be happy.
The releasing dates for the tools have also been announced. The software encoder and decoder will be published this September or later. This will be followed by hard encoders which are a must for mobile applications and TV boxes. Like H.26x standards, H.266 will be licensed under FRAND terms and will come with some royalty-free options like the open-source AV1 and the base EVC implementation. Here is a complete list of features of the new H.266/VVC.
