In general, active noise canceling headphones provide more decibel protection than passive noise canceling headphones because they have a built-in amplifier and signal processor, they can provide up to 30 decibels of noise cancellation. Passive noise canceling headphones only cancel out about 20 decibels because it doesn’t include an active signal processor and microphone. However, many people prefer passive noise canceling headphones because they are less expensive, lighter and more comfortable.

Noise canceling mics are very similar to noise canceling headphones. They are also designed to suppress or cancel out ambient background noise by creating inverse sound waves. However, instead of feeding the inverse soundwaves into speakers, they feed them directly into a microphone input on an audio device. This analog method is far less complicated, but also provides less sound reduction.
