Social media app Instagram is testing a subscription feature that will allow creators to earn extra money by allowing fans to pay a fee to unlock exclusive content such as stories and live videos.
A new subscription option also appears along with Instagram badges that users can purchase as gift creators during live sessions. It is hoped that this will work in a similar way to Twitter Blue, where users will have access to exclusive tweets and other content.
This is not the first time the subscription-based feature has been noticed, and Instagram chief Adam Moseri announced earlier this year that the company would be exploring it (via Business Insider).
Instagram is testing a creator’s profile with a subscribe button. Subscribers will have access to specific content such as stories and live videos. When you DM (direct message) the author or comment on their posts, a special member badge will appear next to your username. Communication with this badge creator will take precedence.
On the creators side, there will be options to view approximate revenue, active members, and expired memberships. Instagram will also allow them to customize their subscription name and plans.
A new “Instagram Subscriptions” section has popped up under the “In-App Purchases” section for the Instagram App Store listing. These subscriptions are priced between $ 0.99 and $ 4.99 in the US. It also appeared on the Indian App Store, which charges a monthly subscription fee of ₹ 89.
