Japan plans to establish a domestic manufacturing base for the production of 2nm process based chips. The country will work with the US to help implement these plans by 2025.
According to a report by NikkeiAsia, Japan is preparing to enter the competition to commercialize the next generation of advanced chipsets. Thus, Tokyo and Washington will support each other through semiconductor technology partnerships.
In addition, the collaboration will involve private companies from both countries, which will also facilitate research on design and mass production. Notably, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is on track to develop large-scale production technology for its advanced 2nm process.
At the same time, Japan seeks to ensure a stable supply of semiconductors through domestic production of next-generation chips. At the same time, the partnership with the US may involve the establishment of a new company or Japanese corporations may even set up a new manufacturing facility. Currently, the country’s Ministry of Finance, Trade and Industry is offering subsidies to reduce the cost of research and development into advanced semiconductors.
Joint research will begin this year, and it is planned to set up a research-mass production center between 2025 and 2027. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip maker, is also setting up a chip fab at Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan. However, this plant will not produce advanced chips and will focus on chip technology from 10nm to 20nm.
