LG to Release a Classic Flagship and a Rollable Phone Early Next Year

LG Next Flagship Smartphone May Sport 6.1 inch Display And Snapdragon 845

LG is moving forward with its newly found obsession to produce smartphones that “swivel” and doubles up. Following the successful debut of LG Wing among others, the brand is expected to kick things up a notch with a rollable smartphone rumoured to release next year. This will be preceded by a classic flagship.

The rollable smartphone and the traditional smartphone projects are titled B Project and Rainbow. The first smartphone to be released is the Candybar smartphone under the V Series during the first quarter of 2021. This will be followed by the rollable smartphone sometime in March. According to the rumours, the whole or a part of the display will be rollable to make the phone handy which can be unrolled to take advantage of the large screen space.

The rollable “Out There” design was teased at the end of the LG Wing announcement. According to the Korean publication The Elec, the company is playing ODM, by outsourcing the manufacture of its smartphones to focus more on the two upcoming projects. The share of the ODM partnership is increasing YoY. In 2018 LG outsourced 10% of the manufacturing, which tripled the next year. This year alone, the company gave the contract to manufacture 60% of its smartphones to other companies. It is expected to touch 70% next year. Some of the smartphones LG is planning to outsource include the upcoming LG Velvet 2 and LG Stylo.

The new found strategy seems to be working for the brand as it has seen remarkable growth in the market shipping 26 million smartphone units this year according to Elec and will touch the 30 million milestone next year. The brand has also seen success in India as it has sold nearly 350 crore worth LG G8X Dual in just 24 hours during the Big Billion Day sales hosted by Flipkart.
