After bidding goodbye to Windows Mobile and Nokia smartphones, Microsoft is now trying their luck on Android and has been developing a lot of Android apps lately, starting with their MS Suite of apps, that work rather well on the Android phones. It added to their confidence in the ecosystem, and the company is ready to launch its first-ever Android phone – the Microsoft Surface Duo.

According to several leaks, the foldable phone is getting ready by the minute, and now a lot of the features have been leaked. The display is 5.6-inches when measured diagonally, and there are two of those as its a foldable. The resolution of the screen is tipped to be 1800 x 1350 pixels, and the screen is AMOLED which is the current flagship standard. The Surface Duo open the screen outwards and can go up to 360 degrees when fully unfold. This offers multiple use cases to help typing as a mini laptop, full-size screen for binge-watching and so on. Do note that when folded inwards, the phone cannot be used until we open it up to a certain degree, which is the design choice Microsoft opted for. This design will surely benefit from the drag and drop split-screen usage featured on the Microsoft Apps. Still, the other app developers are yet to port similar functionality in their respective apps.
The camera department will be handled by a single 11 MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture at the rear. It will feature a 3,460 mAh battery. Other reports claim that the phone will lack NFC Connectivity and Wireless Charging.
The leaks also suggest that the phone is 4.8 mm thick when fully open and 9.6mm thick when fold. The phone will be powered by the one-year-old Snapdragon 855 which could be underwhelming given the fact that all Android flagships now ship with the latest Snapdragon 865 at heart. This is because the company had finalised the Surface Duo a while back, but the launch somehow got delayed. This also means that the phone will lack 5G connectivity which is disappointing.
Earlier Microsoft suggested the release window to be towards the end of the year, but it seems like the launch has been preponed. If everything goes well, we could see the phone hitting shelves in less than two months. The phone will ship with Android 10 rather than the upcoming Android 11, but a software update should hit the devices soon when the stable Android 11 is released.
