Lenovo owned Motorola launches two flagship phones – Motorola Edge and Edge+. These phones are the first proper flagships from the company in a while. The launch event was streamed live. As the name, ‘Edge’ suggests both phones have curves at the front and at the back towards the left and right edges. Let us have a look at the features and price.
Motorola Edge+
Motorola Edge+ comes with a 6.7-inch AMOLED curved display of Full HD+ resolution. The screen resolution is 2,340 x 1080. The phone screen has an aspect ratio of 21:9, and the screen refresh rate is set at 90 Hz. The screen refresh rate can also be set to auto or 60 Hz to save battery.
The Edge+ is powered by the Snapdragon 865 5G platform which is the latest from Qualcomm. Its GPU is handled by Adreno 650. The phone comes with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM option and 256 GB of storage of UFS 3.0. This model lacks a microSD card expansion.
Coming to the cameras, the primary camera at the back is a 108 MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 0.7 micro-pixel sizes. It also supports Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). The second camera is a telephoto lens with 8 MP sensor and f/2.4 aperture and 1.0 micro-pixels. It supports 3x optical zoom. It is accompanied by a 117-degree field of view ultrawide angle camera of 16 MP resolution. This camera is equipped with macro vision as well. Lastly, there is a Time-of-flight (ToF) sensor taking the count to four. The selfie snapper is a 25 MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture inside a hole punch.
Motorola Edge+ houses a 3.5mm audio jack and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The phone is powered by a giant 5,000 mAh non-removable battery and supports 18W wired charging, 15W wireless charging and a 5W reverse wireless charging. It has a single nano-sim slot. Like most flagship phones it supports 5G in sub-6 GHz and mm-wave flavours, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 The phone weighs 203 gram and is 9.6 mm thick. It runs stock android based on Android 10.
Motorola Edge
The Motorola Edge shares quite a few features with it’s bigger brother, Edge+. It has a 6.7-inch AMOLED curved display of Full HD+ resolution. The screen resolution is 2,340 x 1080. The phone screen has an aspect ratio of 21:9, and the screen refresh rate is set at 90 Hz. These specs are the same as the Motorola Edge+
Motorola Edge is powered by the Snapdragon 765 5G platform which is an upper midrange chipset from Qualcomm. Its GPU is handled by Adreno 620. The phone comes with 6 GB RAM option and 128 GB of storage space.
Coming to the cameras, here’s where Edge is inferior to its more expensive ‘Plus’ version. The primary camera at the back is a 64 MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 0.8 micro-pixel sizes. The second camera is a telephoto lens with 8 MP sensor and f/2.4 aperture and 1.12 micro-pixels. It supports 2X optical zoom. It is accompanied by a 117-degree field of view ultrawide angle camera of 16 MP resolution. This camera is equipped with macro vision as well. Lastly, there is a Time-of-flight (ToF) sensor taking the count to four. The selfie snapper is a 25 MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture inside a hole punch.
Unlike the Edge+, the lighter version comes with IP54 water resistance. Motorola Edge houses a 3.5mm audio jack and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The phone is powered by a 4,500 mAh non-removable battery and supports 18W wired charging. However, it lacks wireless charging support. It has a hybrid sim slot with microSD card storage expansion. It supports 5G in sub-6 GHz and but lacks mm-wave, it has WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 The phone weighs 188 gram and is 9.29 mm thick. The software is based on Android 10.
Pricing and Availability
The edge screen has a few functionalities like lighting up along with a notification, incoming calls and plugging the phone. The Edge+ is available in two colours – Smokey Sangria and Thunder Grey, whereas the Edge is available in Solar Black and Midnight Magenta. The audio comes from a stereo speaker setup with one speaker at the bottom and the other doubles up as an earpiece for calls.
Both phones will be available for purchase from May 14. The Motorola Edge+ price starts at $999. Motorola did not reveal the pricing of the Edge version, but we will update the information as soon as it is revealed.
