In a bid to capture the flagship camera segment, OmniVision has announced the new OV50A image sensor before the MWC Shanghai is underway. The OV50A image sensor is a 50MP unit and it is the first from the company to feature 100% phase detection which will help in better focus.
The sensor is expected to debut in flagship smartphones of various OEMs and according to the official press release, the new image sensor will have 1.0-micron pixel size, selective conversion gain and a 1/1.5” optical format with quad phase detection (QPD) autofocus technology and on-chip remosaic.
In the words of Arun Jayaseelan, the staff marketing manager at OmniVision, the QPD technology will be a game-changer for the company as he says, “One of the biggest selling points for mobile phones is camera performance, and they have been steadily closing the gap with DSLR cameras for years. Our QPD autofocus technology now makes that gap even smaller, by bringing DSLR level autofocus performance to smartphone cameras.”

The QPD technology aims to bring a whole load of improvements to the smartphone cameras as it will improve factors such as distance calculation, autofocus, and low light performance translating to better image quality from both wide and ultrawide sensors. We expect the sensor to be featured in the flagship smartphones set to debut this year.
Speaking of other enhancements, the new OmniVision OV50A image sensor will feature the company’s PureCel Plus-S stacked die technology. This technology when combined with QPD colour filter array and hardware remosaic the sensor is expected to showcase improved autofocus and produce high quality 50 megapixel Bayer output or 8K videos in real-time. When it comes to numbers, the new sensor can capture 50MP 8K videos with QPD autofocus at 30 fps, 12.5MP 8K videos at 60fps, and 4K/2K videos at 90 fps.
