Oppo Patents a Clamshell Foldable with Screen Exposed

Jumping on the bandwagon of foldable, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo is working on a foldable smartphone. The design was spotted as a patent recently. The foldable from Oppo according to the filing is having a clamshell design with a screen facing outwards.

Judging by the renders, it closely resembles the Moto Razr foldable. The renders suggest that the design makes it smaller than its counterparts with one half slightly shorter in dimension. When folded the screen is visible as its outside and it has a forehead that is exposed. This is similar to the Motorola Razr which had a chin with a fingerprint reader.

One feature that sets it apart is the ‘angle detection’. This helps the phone to stay at any angle you put it on. Furthermore, the software would be tweaked such that the user can use the phone with different functions at different angles. The thickest part of the phone is the forehead which also houses the camera. This design helps you to use the cameras as a selfie camera or as a rear camera when folded.

If you remember, this design was showcased by Oppo at last year’s MWC but that design folded horizontally whereas this one folds vertically. You can see a 3D render from LetsGoDigital. Do note that this render is not final and the position or the number of cameras could change later. The renders also point to a fingerprint scanner and an iris scanner at its thickest part. Speaking of the benefits of the design, it eliminates the need for a second screen or additional cameras. This design also avoids bends like that of an inward foldable. The biggest drawback is the fact that it leaves the screen exposed making it prone to damages more easily.
