Google I/O 2021 is underway and the company is announcing new and exciting projects. One among them is Project Starline. The keynote gave us a glimpse of how technology works. This technology will project holograms making you feel as if you are chatting with someone real even if the person isn’t physically present.
As shown in the video, when a person sits in front of a glass pane the glass shows the other person on the chat in real 3D. The company successfully tested this technology with real people who were chatting from California and New York City. Google’s blog post says the Project Starline combines new features in “computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio and real-time compression” The display is designed in such a way that it does not require the person to wear 3D glasses or other apparatus to see the other person in full depth and detail.
The report from Wired suggests that Project Starline employs custom-made booths with multiple depth sensors and cameras to create the 3D models of humans. In addition, there are certain adjustments to lighting and shadow. Google makes use of WebRTC infrastructure to transmit the data.
Some concerns shared in the report could be a serious drawback of the technology. It says that if the person moves a few inches from his position the 3D rendering fails. Besides, there were some artefacts that popped up during the demo. Google aims to work on it and bring down the hardware requirement considerably. As it’s still too early stages, we expect the technology to take its time to be consumer-ready. Current Google is conducting very early trials in partnership with some enterprise and media customers.
