Quibi is a new streaming service, adding to the already long list of services available. This new service has a few tricks up its sleeves to stand out. Quibi has short-form TV shows which are less than 10 minutes in duration. These are specifically designed for watching on a smartphone.
What is Quibi?
Quibi brings competition to Netflix and Hulu with a different objective. It aims to provide short contents with each episode less than ten minutes long. These episodes are released every day. When it comes to movies, they are broken down into chapters of short duration. Another highlight is that Quibi is made for smartphone users. Its content is designed to be viewed in the landscape as well as in portrait mode.
Founders Meg Whitman and Jeffrey Katzenberg have scored a $1 billion funding from Disney, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Viacom, WarnerMedia, Lionsgate, MGM, ITV and Entertainment One.
What to Watch?
Quibi offers three types of contents – Movies, Unscripted Docuseries and Daily curated bites. The movies are broken into chapters with a duration of fewer than ten minutes, and Unscripted Docuseries are ranging from seven to ten-minute too. Daily curated bites offer six minutes of news, entertainment and inspirational content. The contents are from genres like drama, comedy, reality and competitions, talk shows and animations.
The company has roped in filmmakers like Steven Speilberg and Guillermo Del Toro. Scripted projects involve Kevin Hart, Stephen and Robbie Amell, Will Forte, Naomi Watts, Kiefer Sutherland, and Kaitlin Olson.
Unscripted series will feature Chrissy Teigen, Zac Efron, Sasha Velour, Idris Elba, Tyra Banks, Sophie Turner and Jennifer Lopez. It includes hidden camera show Punk’d and dating game show Singled Out.
Pricing and Availability
The Quibi app is available for download for both iOS and Android platforms.
After download, a sign up to service is required after which you can start binging content. The pricing starts at $4.99 per month for the basic subscription providing access to its contents with ads. For the ad-free version, you have to opt for the $7.99 per month plan.
The app offers a chance for you to try the service for free for 90 days as a trial. All you need is to pre-register to download the app from the App Store or Play Store. The service goes official on April 6th.
