It’s almost 3 months since the year 2018 has started and as of now, we have only seen two Samsung smartphones i.e. Galaxy S9 and S9+. Both these devices are flagship smartphones by Samsung. But as of now, we haven’t seen any mid-range smartphone by this Korean giant. Now today, Samsung has launched their 1st mid-range smartphone in 2018 i.e. Galaxy J7 Prime 2. This is one of the most surprise launches this year because Samsung didn’t tease anything about this device anywhere. So now let’s have a look what Samsung is bringing into their mid-range smartphone of 2018.
This Galaxy J7 Prime 2 is powered by Exynos 7 series processor that’s am octa core processor clocked at 1.6Ghz with Mali-T830 MP1 GPU. If this sounds a bit familiar then you are right, it’s the Exynos 7870 processor which was being used in last year’s Galaxy J7 Prime. It sports a 5.5 inch Full HD TFT display with the old 16:9 aspect ratio along with Corning Gorilla Glass protection (unknown version). It has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage along with expandable storage up to 256GB via Micro SD card slot. Talking about the camera, the rear camera is a 13MP shooter with f1.9 lens and autofocus, while the front facing camera is also a 13MP shooter with f1.9 lens, but it’s not clear whether it’s autofocus or fixed focus.

This device runs on last year’s Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with Samsung’s experience UI on top, no word on Oreo update as of now. It packs in a 3300mAh battery without fast charging support. It has the new trend AR Sticker feature which will create funny stickers using your face, but as it’s a Samsung mid-ranger we don’t know how will it this feature will be implemented. It has a front mounted fingerprint sensor, and surprisingly being a Samsung mid-ranger, it has accelerometer and proximity sensor. Connectivity options are 4G LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, FM Radio, Micro USB 2.0 port, and USB OTG support. As of now, the colour option available is only Black, but we might be expected a gold colour variant as well.
Pricing and Availability :
- This Galaxy J7 Prime 2 is priced at INR 13,990 (USD 251).
- As of now, it’s listed only at online Samsung Store, and there’s no stock available.
- No information on the start of sales of this device.
So that’s all the information we have as of now. Personally speaking, this is surely not looking like a 2018 mid-range smartphone. It has all those things which we used to see on 2016 mid-ranger, whether it is old 16:9 display panel, outdated processor, lack of many sensors, TFT display, mediocre camera, an old Android version. It might stand in the competition of sales number due to Samsung’s brand value but surely can’t stand when compared with other devices priced similarly.
