Samsung, one of the most popular smartphone makers reveals that the company is working on a new foldable phone concept that uses special programmable function keys and gestures. The patent which was filled in November 2020 titled as Foldable electronic device was originally published in May 2021.
The patent tells us about a folding smartphone with gesture functionality replacing all buttons. The patent also sums up the possible positioning of the buttons and the expansion of features to the flip-style phones. The button is expected to be physical but they might be implied by way of user gesture controls.
The Korean carmaker explains that in one of the embodiments, the gesture input signal may be given through finger movements whereas, on another, the swipe gesture may be through touching a specific section of the first side surface 200c. They function in such a way that the swiping gesture allows a key input signal generates via main edge keys which are set on the first side surface and these key input signals can be recognized as a sweep gesture input signal.
Samsung might integrate this new functionality into the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the future version of its folding tablet. The patent doesn’t closely implicate what device might use the feature or when it might be available.
