Everything about India’s first hydrogen train
The trial run will be starting between Haryana’s Jind and Sonipat railway stations. The Research, Design, and Standard Organisation (RDSO) has developed the design for the first hydrogen powered train of the country. This will make India to join a select group of countries that have started the usage of hydrogen as fuel for trains. The designing setup of India’s first hydrogen train is now complete and it is expected that the final trial will be done in the first quarter of 2025. It is worth mentioning that the design was fixed and released in December 2021.
Speaking about the train, the name of the first hydrogen train of India is yet to be decided. The train features 8 passenger coaches capable of accommodating 2,638 passengers on a single trip. The train has a maximum speed of 110 km/h and three coaches will be dedicated to storing hydrogen cylinders and housing integrated fuel cell converters, batteries, and air reservoirs. The integration work of the first hydrogen train of India is underway at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
The hydrogen-powered trains use electricity generated through hydrogen and oxygen fuel cells to power the motor. So the new initiative is focusing on green energy.
