What is WhatsApp OTP scam

As the name suggests, the scam is totally related to the OTP and you may get a message from someone who will act like your friend and he will say that he is going through some emergency or a bad condition and you will receive an OTP and that particular person will ask you to send the that OTP in the chat for some reason.

If you provide that particular OTP to the person then you will lose your access to your WhatsApp account and that person will get access to your WhatsApp account and all the other important information as well as other contents.

How could this possible

It is a natural thing and there is no groundbreaking technology in this particular scam. Whenever we change our smartphone or reinstall WhatsApp on the device, we get an OTP to authenticate our number and the same setup is happening here as well. The person who is acting as your friend is trying to install WhatsApp on his device and logging in with your mobile number and the OTP which he asking from you is to verify your mobile number on his mobile phone.

What will be the effect

When you provide the OTP he can able to login into your account and this will enable him to access your important information which you pass through your account and the personal movements which you share with your near and dear ones.

That particular person can able to misuse your contents or he/she can able to blackmail you for your personal moments.

What can I do

You just need to follow the simple formula, as you don’t give the OTP to the person and also make sure that your device as well as WhatsApp account is secured. You can able to protect your device and the WhatsApp account by using the biometric features which is widely available on the current devices as you can able to use the fingerprint sensor or Face Unlock to unlock the account and you can also make sure that your smartphone is locked with the above mentioned features.
