The Indian government has demanded the VPN service providers to collect the data of the users including sensitive information such as names, IP addresses among others. This will be against the policy and the working setup of the VPN service providers and it is also against the privacy of the user. When a popular VPS service provider called ExpressVPN recently announced to close its Indian service and now another popular service provider – Surfshark has announced a similar statement.
It is officially confirmed that Surfshark will shut down its physical servers in India before the implementation of the new rule in the country and the service provider will offer virtual servers for the users of the country.
Surfshark has taken a similar step to ExpressVPN, and the company will bring virtual Indian servers, and the physical ones will be located in Singapore and London.
It is also said that users will be able to find the same in the regular list of servers and the virtual servers will work identically to the physical servers and the main difference is that the servers are located in the country.
The government has directed to keep user data for at least 5 years including IP addresses, usage patterns, and even other forms of identifiable information and the information must be shared with the authorities when requested. It is also asked to implement the new rule by June 27 in the country.
