UC Web on last Wednesday 7th Feb 2018 announced an updated version 12.0 of UC Browser which allows a low data consumption and zero buffer in India. UCWeb owned by Alibaba’s Mobile Business Group has refocused on India, as UC Browser has surpassed 130 million monthly active users in India, and has become sixth-most downloaded mobile app in the country.
Shallia Li, Head of UC Browser (International Business) at Alibaba Mobile Business Group said, “We have reached 59% of mobile browser share in 2016, and doing well globally with India becoming largest overseas market outside China,”. UC Browser, according to Li, is the fastest-growing mobile browser in India during the last five years.
Version 12.0 available for download via Google Play – comes with new features and optimizations with a big focus on videos. Also, user’s can easily get a preview on a thumbnail by clicking the video and decide whether to continue watching before downloading the whole clip.
UC Browser’s “Be Smart’ feature uses big-data technology to cater to user’s demands with personalized recommendations and rich content”. UC Browser now claims to save up to 50 percent data when viewing videos, as compared to the previous version, with the aim of offering a “no buffering” video experience.
UC Browser is ranked at top with 43.27% mobile browser market share in India as of January 2018, followed by Chrome (35.73%), Opera (10.46%), Samsung Internet (2.75%), Safari (2.69%) and Firefox (2.05%), according to data from StatCounter, a web traffic analysis platform.
The company is heavily banking on Indian mobile market with more than a billion subscriptions. In 2017, India overtook the US market in smartphone adoption.
Content consumption on UC Browser, according to the company, has been on a steady rise with browser witnessing 50% growth in page views on news feed from second quarter to fourth quarter of 2017 in India and Indonesia markets.
