According to an FAQ Page published by Whatsapp, the messages sent via the platform will soon start disappearing. The feature was spotted last year. With this feature users, can set their messages to auto disappear from chats before seven days of composing it. This feature will be available for both personal chats and group conversations.
However according to the report, users can still copy and save content from these messages even if they have disappeared, and we do not know how that will work. Even then, the forwarded messages will not disappear on its own. If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat,” says the company FAQ page.
This feature was first discovered by the WhatsApp beta tracker, WABetaInfo. It is worth mentioning that these messages will appear in the notification shade until the app is opened but will go missing from the chats. Do note that the receiver will be able to forward or take screenshots of the messages and defeat its purpose. Any media shared with disappearing option enabled will not leave a trace afterwards unless the auto-download option is enabled.
The company has also released a detailed guide on how to use this feature on Android, iPhone, and KaiOS as well as Web and Desktop for both individual messages and group chats. After the wide rollout of the feature here is how to set a message to disappear on its own :
- Open the WhatsApp chat and then tap the contact’s or the group’s name for whom you want to turn on or off the disappearing messages feature.
- Now, tap the Disappearing Messages option.
- If prompted, tap Continue.
- Select On/ Off as required.
