The popular instant messaging application WhatsApp recently introduced the new username feature and the enabled users to reserve the preferred username. This particular feature is developed to add an extra layer of protection and WhatsApp says that the feature will enable users to contact without sharing the phone number as your username can be used to search your contact.
But the upcoming username feature created security and privacy concerns and that made the Indian government to order WhatsApp to pause the planned roll out of the feature under the IT Act 2000, the IT rules 2021, and other applicable laws.
Now WhatsApp has responded to the Indian Government and said that users still need a phone number to use WhatsApp and that it has built multiple layers of Defence against scams into its username system. To protect against impersonation, WhatsApp has the high profile names so they can be claimed only by their legitimate owners.
It is worth mentioning that the username feature is an optional feature and you can do by visiting the settings option of WhatsApp and selecting the account option and then you can find the username option.
