Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold Arrives with World’s First Liquid Lens Camera and 8.1-inch Display

The Chinese electronics giant, Xiaomi is known for its innovation and honest pricing. Today the company has decided to flex its muscle on the former and has gone all guns blazing. The new MI Mix fold is proof of that and it is the company’s first-ever foldable. A foldable from Xiaomi was long in the rumour mill and after multiple leaks and rumours, the device is finally here in the flesh.

Speaking of the smartphone, it offers a massive display when unfolded and features the world’s first liquid lens camera in a smartphone that helps improve the autofocus and quality massively. Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold Specifications

The foldable features an 8.01-inch OLED QHD+ display that is foldable inwards with 1440p+ resolution and offers a 4:3 aspect ratio. It comes with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. The maximum brightness peaks at 900 nits. The company has included desktop mode with multiple resizable windows to let users take advantage of the large tablet-sized display, which can be activated with a three-finger swipe. This foldable display is rated to last folding up to 1 million times.

The display outside is a 6.52-inch AMOLED panel with 840 x 2,520 pixels resolution resulting in a 27:9 aspect ratio. It is complemented by a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate. It supports both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision and can achieve a peak brightness of 650 nits. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset combined with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS3.1 storage. The cooling is managed by large vapour chambers, thermal gel and multiple layers of graphite sheets which keeps the heat from 5G antennas and charging system in check.

Coming to the camera department, the company has introduced a new Surge C1 image processing chip which is responsible for managing Auto Focus, Auto Exposure and Auto White Balance. The Mi Mix Fold sports a triple camera setup at the back. It is lead by a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor with 2.1 µm pixels covered with a 7P lens and supports 9-in-1 binning. Now comes the star of the show, which is the telephoto camera that houses the world’s first Liquid Lens technology. It is made of a flexible film with transparency and it functions like the human eye with the help of a precision motor. This liquid can sustain the temperature from -40 to 60 degree Celsius. It supports 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom with focusing ability and can function as a macro camera with subjects as close as 3cm. Finally, there is a 13MP ultra-wide camera with a 123-degree FOV and f/2.4 aperture.

The smartphone is backed by a 5,000 mAh cell split into two 2,460mAh units and supports 67W fast wired charging. The audio is tuned by Harman Kardon and the smartphone has a quad-speaker setup that gives a 3D spatial audio experience.

Pricing and Availability

Xiaomi Mi Fold with 12GB + 256GB memory configuration will be sold at CNY10,000 ($1,520/€1,300) and if the buyer wishes to get 512GB storage it’s available for CNY 11,000. The maxed out 16GB + 512GB variant will be sold for CNY 13.000. The first sale will be held on April 14.
