The Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Xiaomi has announced that they will no longer release Mi A-Series smartphones with Android One Program. This news might come as a shocker to you Android-Purists but it has been a long time coming.
The Android One Program aimed to provided smartphones with clean, no bloat software experience running AOSP (Android Open Source Project) versions of Android OS directly from Google. The project promised timely security patches and OS updates irrespective of the brand and budget to which the smartphone belonged to.
Xiaomi had joined Google to release Mi A1, the first smartphone from the company running Google’s software with camera and security applications from Xiaomi. It received a warm welcome due to its software, build and camera capabilities. But things did not go well, as the software was full of bugs and at the end of the day Xiaomi failed to update the smartphones in time. Then came Mi A2 and Mi A3 riddled with similar problems. Now finally, Xiaomi has decided to withdraw from the Android One program.
This means there won’t be a Mi A4 which was expected to be in the works. Now that Xiaomi has also jumped ship, it seems Nokia is the last one standing to release phones with Android One program. Earlier Motorola used to launch smartphones running Android One Software but later bailed. To refresh your memory, the Android One Program kickstarted with Micromax Canvas A1, Lava and Karbonn Android One phones which received praises for their price and software experience.
