If you are someone who hates the current selfie camera placements like punch-holes, notches, or pop-up mechanism, Xiaomi has some good news for you. Xiaomi has demoed its solution to the problem. The company is ready with its third-generation under-display camera, which is ready for mass production.
Xiaomi VP, shared a video yesterday on the Chinese social platform, Weibo teasing the new under-display camera solution. The video gives us an insight into how the technology works. The company calls this a third-generation solution because the first one was a lab-only product. Even the second attempt wasn’t ready to leave the lab. But with the third iteration, the company believes the technology is finally ready for mass production.
Xiaomi has also explained how the technology worked in a separate Weibo post. The panel is doubling the number of pixels over the small circle to have the same pixel density and color accuracy as the rest of the screen. It is borrowing colors from the neighboring pixels but is able to turn off/go black on-demand – mostly when the camera is turned on. This has also enabled the company to work on minimizing the glares around that portion of the display. Hence the images turned out to be vivid with accurate colors.
Xiaomi expects smartphones bearing this technology to hit the market early next year under the Mi 11 Series. But Xiaomi will not be the first company to bring it to the masses as ZTE is expected to introduce a working smartphone with an under-display selfie camera on September 1.
