The latest Android 17 operating system is coming with enhanced security features and today Google has confirmed that the company has introduced a stronger lock screen protections in the latest version of the Android operating system and that will make PIN and password guessing attacks less effective. So let’s get into the article to check out the full details.
Google strengthens lock screen security in Android 17
It is revealed that Android 17 will be reducing the number of failed PIN and password attempts allowed before progressively longer lockout periods take effect. Google will allow up to six incorrect guesses in the first minute, seven within six minutes, eight within 25 minutes, 12 over 24 hours and 19 across five years. It will not accept extra attempts after 20 failed PIN or password entries.
The company has also implemented the duplicate-guess detection and this will avoid the entering of the same incorrect PIN or password multiple times. The system will not count the repeated entries with the same incorrect credentials and the system recognises the duplicate entry and shows a message explaining why it has not been counted.
With the latest Android 17, the company is also changing how lockout timers are presented. The operating system will not show the remaining time in seconds, but the lock screen now shows easier-to-read messages using minutes or other time units. You will also get a recovery shortcut to the lock screen and the link directs users to account recovery resources which can be accessed from another device if you are not able to unlock your device.
