The aptX and aptX HD Encoders of Qualcomm provide amazing audio quality on Android devices and the same is having a licensing fee that every smartphone manufacturer needs to pay. This usually restricts high-quality audio from budget and entry-level smartphones but now things are going to be changed in the near future as Qualcomm has officially announced that it is removing the license fee which means the aptX and aptX HD encoders will be now available for free on Android devices.
With the new move, any developer is capable to create a custom Android-based ROM and can now add support for Qualcomm aptX or aptX HD without ripping them from a licensed build. The encoders will be available in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) Apache license and are free to use.
But the company has clarified that the brands will still have to pay licensing fees to use other aspects of aptX including the decoder on the receiving end of the Bluetooth connection.
