Last year in October 2017, Amazon launched its Alexa-Powered smart speaker line-up the Echo Plus (Rs 14,999), the Echo (Rs 9,999) and the Echo Dot (Rs 3,999) in India. Now today Amazon has silently added another smart speaker to its line-up – The Echo Spot.
The Echo Spot is basically an Echo Dot with and added functionality of a display and a camera. Amazon believes that the size and viewing angle of the screen make Echo Spot ideal for use on your desk or a nightstand so you can view your calendar, see the weather update, check the time, wake up to music alarms, turn your lights on and off, see shopping and to-do lists, and more.
Echo Spot has a circular display with a resolution of 480 x 480 pixels and it measures around 2.5-inches across the circular face. With numerous analog and digital watch faces, the Echo Spot might be an ideal replacement for that boring table clock on your nightstand.
Amazon Echo Spot Specifications:
- Speaker size: 1.4″ speaker
- Dimensions: 104 x 96 x 91 mm
- Screen size: 2.5″
- Weight: 419 g
Echo Spot can perform all the features of Alexa-powered Echo devices like “make calls, get news and information from the web, reminders, play music, control compatible smart home devices, as well as use Alexa skills to order food from Zomato, request a ride from Ola, book a carpenter from Urbanclap, and more”. The added functionality of a display lets you watch the latest news from NDTV, Times Now, ESPN Cricinfo, Aaj Tak, and more also it lets you easily see and manage your family’s calendar or start a timer while you’re cooking something in the kitchen.
The ability to wake up to musical alarms was among one of the most requested features that Amazon India had got feedback about after the launch of the previous Echo devices. Taking that into account, Amazon had added the ability to set musical alarms on Echo Spot and also made this feature available on all its earlier Echo devices.
The launch of Echo Spot comes just weeks after Google launched its own Google Assistant-based Google Home and Google Home Mini exclusively on Flipkart. While Google Home and Home Mini are directly competing with Echo and Echo Dot, the Echo Spot will stand apart as a unique offering.
However, Echo Spot is not the first Echo device in the series to feature a touchscreen. The first such device was the Echo Show, which I believe won’t be coming to India anytime soon.
Despite the compact form factor, The Echo Spot produces a decent amount of sound despite. Since the Spot is meant to be more of a personal device likely to be placed on your desk or on your kitchen counter, the sound output is good enough for such environments.
The display is what really separates it from the other smart speakers. While it can perform all the regular Echo tasks, the Echo Spot can play back movies from Prime Videos or show trailers directly from IMDB. If you are in the kitchen and want a recipe, you can simply ask Alexa to show video recipes. Since the screen is circular in shape, Amazon has also added an option to zoom in and the video will occupy the entire circular screen rather than appearing in landscape mode. This is one neat feature designed exclusively for the Spot.
The Echo Spot also has a camera up front so you can do a video call with another Echo Spot user or through Alexa app. The added camera might raise a few concerns to users about their privacy as already there is too much happening around with Facebook privacy invasion. Amazon has added a button to Echo Spot that electronically disengages the camera to restraint from people dropping in on users.
The Echo Spot will be available exclusively on Amazon at an MRP of Rs 12,999 but is available at a discounted price of Rs 10,499. Amazon is also offering an additional discount of Rs 1,000 to those who purchase two units at once and 10 percent cash back on ICICI Bank credit and debit cards. The Echo Spot is available in black and white colors. You can check it out on the below link.
Amazon has also slashed price of the Amazon Echo which is currently available at 7,999.
