After facing a backlash for the reportedly trashing of millions of items in one of Amazon’s warehouses in the UK, Amazon unveils two programmes to reduce the destruction of unsold products. These two programs will help to give the products a second life in case of customer returns and overstock items. The continuous accusations against the company made them to drive home a idea of zero product disposal and even stopped the sending of items to landfills.
The first program called, FBA Grade and Resell that will allow third-party sellers on Amazon to sell returned items by listing them as “used”. The price of the products is based on their condition. This program is already on track in the UK and will be soon available in the US and other European countries by the end of 2021.
The second program called, the FBA Liquidations program that will allow sellers to use Amazon wholesale channels to sell some of their inventory in bulk from their returned or overstocked goods to recover a portion of that value. This program is currently available in the US and some parts of Europe and it will be available in the UK in August 2021.
Amazon estimates that these programs will rescue 300 million products per year once they are fully enacted and it would help in build a circular economy. The e-commerce tech giant also hopes that these two programs will help the businesses selling on Amazon reduce costs and improves their carbon rating.
