Google wasn’t tired about innovation and bringing best in class technology in its smartphone Pixel and now that could extend to the processors. Google has hired a veteran chip architect Manu Gulati away from Apple.This indicates big changes are coming for future versions of the Pixel smartphone.
The company’s previous Nexus phones were not often updated with hardware’s but offered low price android phones with faster software updates. Some leaks reported that Google was in talks to develop their own chips as far back as 2015.The company currently has no processor in its own, which currently relies on third-party chips for all their products, like Pixel phones use Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC. The same chip is being used by a number of other Android phone manufacturers, including HTC, LG, Lenovo and Asus and all offer very similar performance specs.
Manu Gulati an Apple micro-architect who worked on the company’s chip development for nearly eight years. Before joining Apple, Gulati worked for close to 15 years at chip makers AMD and Broadcom, giving him a total of 27 years of experience in the field. Gulati started working at Apple since 2009 and was the backbone to the company’s biggest sellers iPad, the iPhone and Apple TV. Apple began using its own chips in the iPad in 2010, which was powered by the company’s A4 chip. Till now, the company uses custom-designed microchips for each of their devices, which make Apple optimise processors both for performance and energy consumption. He publicly announced the job change on his Linkedin profile Tuesday morning, stating that he now works as Google’s Lead SoC Architect.
Google began to shift its mobile device strategy to take on Apple directly with its new premium Pixel phones. Behalf of that Google has started to post a number of job offers for chip design-related positions. One for a “Mobile SoC CPU Architect” and a “Mobile SoC Architect,”. The one who will help define the future generations of smartphone processors.
If Google can give the best performance smartphone through custom processors, that will change the game. It might be far better than Samsung and Oneplus devices and Google will be waving its flag as hardware competitor for years.
