Alphabet Inc’s, Google on Safer Internet Day (6th Feb) announced a public initiative “#SecurityCheckKiya”(“Did you do a Security Check”) to create awareness around internet safety. The online campaign aims at educating users on the importance of online security.
Targeted at young and mostly first-time internet users the search giant has outlined basic steps users can take to protect themselves from account hijacks, safeguard Android devices from malware, and secure personal data in the event of a device loss.

With the growing user database and cheap data available thanks to the battle between Telecom Giants, users are increasingly vulnerable to bad actors and abuse on the web, the company said in a statement.
Director of Trust and Safety at Google India, Sunita Mohanty, said, “Just like in the physical world where we are asked before stepping out of the house — “Main door lock Kiya?”; on interacting with unknown people and accepting gifts from those we don’t trust — “strangers se baat toh Nahi Kiya?”; it’s now upon us to ask everyone Internet pe #SecurityCheckKiya [Have you done the security check yet?]” While security is built into all of Google services, keeping the web safe for everyone is a shared responsibility”.
We are asking users to get started on their journey by securing their data and devices by asking them #SecurityCheckKiya”, Mohanty added.
According to Google, the below three steps will safeguard a user’s:
1. Google account holders can check the security status of their account with a single click by going to the Run Security Check option under My Account > Sign-in and Security.
2. Android users can use the Google Play Protect tool that scans the device for malware apps during and after installation.
3. Android users can download the Find My Device app that allows easy location of a lost Android phone. It can also help to secure personal information on the lost phone.
Google has recently been actively raising its guard against rising internet security breaches. Google mentioned in its blog said, “In 2017 alone, we took down more than 700,000 apps that violated Google Play policies, 70% more than the apps taken down in 2016. Google Play Protect is the ideal security blanket for your mobile device, so can you consider yourself and your data covered.”
