At the beginning of the year, we had reported that Google will be merging its Android Pay and Google Wallet services under one new brand called “Google Pay.” Now after more than a month, Google has started rolling out “Google Pay” via an update on Play Store combining both Android Pay and Google Wallet services.
The update changes the Android Pay to Google Pay on the play store, with a new logo and material design UI with android pay’s core functionality. The app has a clean UI, segmented into Home and Cards: Home shows recent payment activity, nearby local offers and stores, and other information using Google’s card-style interface and Cards shows where all your individual credit, debit, reward, and gift cards live.
“The app, which begins rolling out today, is just one part of everything we’ve got planned. We’re currently working on bringing Google Pay to all Google products, so whether you’re shopping on Chrome or with your Assistant, you’ll have a consistent checkout experience using the cards saved to your Google Account.”
“We’re also working with partners online and in stores, so you’ll see Google Pay on sites, in apps, and at your favorite places around the world. As we continue to expand to even more devices and services, the new app offers an exciting glimpse of what’s to come.” Said Gerardo Capiel – Product Management Director, Consumer Payments and Varouj Chitilian – Engineering Director, Consumer Payments.
Google says that users in the United States and the United Kingdom will be able to use the main Google Pay app to send and receive money from friends and family members in “the next few months”, but until then, the Google Wallet app is being changed to Google Pay Send with an updated UI and branding, too. The new update should reach everyone in a couple of days time.
Google Pay can be used for transit in cities such as Kiev, London, and Portland (with more coming soon), and stop worrying about pass once and for all. Now all you need at the turnstile is the device that’s already in your hand.
Like all Google products, Google Pay comes with strong security protections to safeguard your account and personal data from security threats. In other words, it’s got your back.
Google plans to bring Google Pay service to all Google products, including Chrome and Assistant. And like Android Pay before it, you’ll be able to use cards and payment information stored in Google Pay across a wide variety of apps and websites when using an Android device or Chrome too.
Google Pay is currently not available in India, and I don’t see any near plans for the launch as well. As we have the Indian version “Google Tez” which got a major update for utility bill payments. But to those of you who live in the US or UK, you can go ahead try the new update by heading to the Play Store or click on the below link.
