Jumping on the fitness wagon, like every other tech company, Amazon has unveiled its new Halo Band which will focus on your health. Technically the Halo Band is not a smart band but it is more of an array of sensors that you can wear on your wrist. These sensors work together to monitor your health.
Speaking of the sensors involved, there is an accelerometer, temperature sensor, heart rate monitor, and a pair of microphones. But the Halo Band lacks a display hence the fabric and silicone bands cover all of the front of the device.
What it does is quite unique and seems to be connected with your speech. The two microphones inside will listen to the tone of your voice and analyze your emotional state throughout the day. Over time it will learn to better recognize your voice and filter out the voice of those around you.
Other than the feature explained above, the Halo Band seems to not follow the conventional smart band features. Speaking of features it does not support, it will not fetch you notifications from your smartphone nor will it let you interact will Alexa. But in order for it to work, you need to subscribe to the service by paying $4 a month. If you won’t pay the fees you will lose access to the advanced features offered by the Amazon Halo Band.
Even if the Halo Band records your voice, there is no room for worry, according to the company. After the phone receives your voice clips for analysis from the band, it is automatically deleted. The copies of the recordings do not leave your device and are not stored on Amazon servers. If you wish, you can mute the mic with the press of a dedicated button on the band. A blinking LED will notify you of the recording status.
The highlight of the Halo Band is the 3D Body Scanning. According to the company, it is more effective than planning weight or BMI readings obtained from the bathroom scales. The app installed on your phone does the scanning from the four photos it takes of your body. These photos are then sent to Amazon servers where the AI makes a 3D model of your body and calculates your body fat. After this, the data is deleted in under 12 hours and is never shared with third parties. Amazon only requires you to scan your body once every two weeks and not stress about it daily. According to the company, Halo will stand as a platform and function as a motivational tool.
The company promises a week worth of battery life and the band is also waterproof up to 50 ATM. It can be full charged in under 90 minutes. The Halo Band costs about $100 and the extra bands are $16 a pop for the silicone band $20 for the fabric one. As part of an Early Access program, you could own one at a price of $65 for the band and a 6 months subscription. Visit amazon.com/halobandto learn more.
